    STREAKY? (cont. from cover)

  Hot Hitters:

It has to be Marco Pernalete of the Arizona Diamondbacks with his league leading .361 average right? Or what about Jason Lane who came out of the gates with fury? Well, you might be surprised who has the longest hitting streaks in the league. Luis Castillo leads the league with a 21 game hitting streak. Despite only batting .289 for the season, 2nd worst on the team, his 21 game hit streak leads the league. Two others, Jorge Posada and Craig Ansman are second on the list with 20 game hit streaks.

If hitting isn't your thing, and you like guys who just flat out produce by getting on base constantly, than look no further than Chipper Jones of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He holds the longest streak of 43 straight games reaching base. During the stretch, he hit .329 with 29 walks. How about that for production!

These guys have been lifting. Todd Helton, Alex Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Paul Konerko, and Andrew Jones have all blasted HR's in 4 striaght games. The biggest produce was Todd Helton who belted 5 bombs and batted .412 during the stretch.

Not So Hot Hitters:

Who says power isn't everything? Hopefully Placido Polanco, Luis Castillo, and Tony Womack because they are all struggling to knock the ball out of the park. Polanco hasn't hit a HR in 67 games, and Castillo or Womack in 64 games. Polanco makes up for his lack of power because he leads his team in Avg.

No thanks, I don't feel like hitting right now. J.R. House went through a stretch in May were he didn't feel like hitting the ball. He went to bat 32 straight times without getting a hit. Since then he has done ok though and got his average up to .290 with 14 HR's.

     The Perfect Game

How many people remember Mark Buehrle throwing a perfect game in May? Probably not to many people realized such an amazing feat was accomplished. It was overshadowed by the bugs the league was working out at the time.

On May 21, 2002, Mark Buehrle took the hill against the Montreal Expos. Buehrle had to battle a lineup with Sammy Sosa, Bernie Williams, Luis Gonzalez, and Craig Biggio to name a few in it. He mowed them all down though in the game of a lifetime, and the first ever Perfect Game and No-Hitter in the FPBL. Buehrle did it with a mix of 6 strikeouts, 7 ground balls, and 14 flyouts. He threw only 104 pitches, and 76 of them were for strikes.

After the game, Buehrle had this to say, "That was simply amazing. I have never had such good command of my pitches. I felt like I could hit any spot I wanted to. My cutter was my best pitch today. That was my out pitch and I was getting all the tough outs using that pitch. I can't begin to describe the feeling. I am just going to sit back and soak it all in." Manager Bobby Cox was also very happy about it, but he had a bigger picture in mind, "Mark went out there and carried us today. He did something that only a few have ever done. He was perfect. More importantly though, we won a big game in the division. We are going to have a tight race this year and every game means something."
