How many people remember Mark Buehrle throwing a perfect game in May? Probably not to many people realized such an amazing feat was accomplished. It was overshadowed by the bugs the league was working out at the time. On May 21, 2002, Mark Buehrle took the hill against the Montreal Expos. Buehrle had to battle a lineup with Sammy Sosa, Bernie Williams, Luis Gonzalez, and Craig Biggio to name a few in it. He mowed them all down though in the game of a lifetime, and the first ever Perfect Game and No-Hitter in the FPBL. Buehrle did it with a mix of 6 strikeouts, 7 ground balls, and 14 flyouts. He threw only 104 pitches, and 76 of them were for strikes. After the game, Buehrle had this to say, "That was simply amazing. I have never had such good command of my pitches. I felt like I could hit any spot I wanted to. My cutter was my best pitch today. That was my out pitch and I was getting all the tough outs using that pitch. I can't begin to describe the feeling. I am just going to sit back and soak it all in." Manager Bobby Cox was also very happy about it, but he had a bigger picture in mind, "Mark went out there and carried us today. He did something that only a few have ever done. He was perfect. More importantly though, we won a big game in the division. We are going to have a tight race this year and every game means something." |
